In the second episode of Our Tiny Islands, airing on Wednesday night on More4, Tom, a ferry worker on Northern Ireland’s largest inhabited island, Rathlin, has a passion for the island’s wildlife. In his free time, he ventures across the barren landscape in search of the elusive Irish hares that call the island home.
At the northern tip of the island, a bird sanctuary perches atop a majestic lighthouse, where puffins attract thousands of visitors annually. However, their habitat is under threat from predators, prompting the National Trust to take action.
Meanwhile, on Bryher in the Isles of Scilly, we encounter a campsite manager with a deep passion for the island’s oldest tradition: racing gigs, a type of long rowing boat.
Once the center of the Scottish slate industry, Easdale in the Inner Hebrides now has a population of just 60. Among them is multimedia artist Lisa, who relocated from Blackpool in search of creative inspiration. She roams the island daily, foraging for materials to incorporate into her art.
Just two miles off the Welsh coast lies Bardsey, once considered the UK’s holiest island. With a religious history dating back to the sixth century, it is believed to be the final resting place of 20,000 saints. During the Middle Ages, it became a significant pilgrimage site, and to this day, it continues to attract those seeking spiritual solace.
Our Tiny Islands airs on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, at 9:00 p.m. on More4.
