In the United Kingdom, there are over 6,000 islands, and the brand new documentary series Our Tiny Islands, takes a look at some of the breathtaking landscapes and unique lifestyles of those who call the tiniest islands home. From Fair Isle in the remote Orkney and Shetland regions to the uninhabited Cockle Island in Northern Ireland and the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall, the series premiere is a window into the wonders and challenges of island existence.
Tony and Catriona, have established themselves as oyster farmers on Gigha, one of the Inner Hebrides islands, supplying their local restaurant and exporting their oysters far and wide. On Fair Isle, a tiny Scottish island, French-born Marie blends her work as a fire officer with traditional sheep herding and knitting, creating the renowned Fair Isle jumpers.
The series also takes us to the Isles of Scilly, a group of 140 islands off the coast of Cornwall, where gardeners Kate and Andy care for the one-of-a-kind 14-acre Abbey Gardens on Tresco, which boasts an impressive collection of plants from across the globe.
Cockle Island, a minuscule and uninhabited speck of land off the Northern Irish coast, serves as a sanctuary for terns. National Trust warden Hugh and volunteer Jim are dedicated to safeguarding this vital bird refuge, regularly monitoring the health and movement of the tern colony.
