The survival reality competition series Outlast returns to Netflix with its second season on Wednesday, September 4. The show, from Aggregate Films and Nomad Entertainment, challenges participants to endure the harsh Alaskan wilderness.
Premiering on March 10, 2023, Outlast quickly gained attention for its intense competition and unique format. The series stands out with its lack of defined rules or an end date, allowing contestants to self-eliminate or be removed for medical reasons. This extreme adventure tests the physical and mental fortitude of 16 “lone wolf” survivalists divided into four teams.
The first season, filmed near the Neka River on Chichagof Island, was all about strategic gameplay and the extreme conditions contestants faced. West of Juneau, Alaska, the rugged landscape pushed the participants to their limits. With minimal supplies, they had to collaborate to survive, knowing that only one team could ultimately claim victory.
This unique format, with no defined rules or timeline, led to some controversial moments. One contestant’s decision to steal sleeping bags, for example, had severe consequences, as it put others at risk of hypothermia and led to their decision to quit the competition.
As the second season begins, audiences can expect more intense challenges and strategic gameplay. The remaining survivalists will have to push themselves even further as they cope with the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness, with only their wits and minimal supplies to aid them.
Outlast Season 2 premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, September 4.
