Paramount+ Documentary Series “Born in Synanon” Premieres December 12

Paramount+ has announced that the documentary series “BORN IN SYNANON” will premiere exclusively on the service on Tuesday, December 12. The four-part series, directed by Geeta Gandbhir, follows one woman’s journey to uncover the truth about Synanon, an experimental community that turned into a cult. Cassidy Arkin, who was born into Synanon, explores her memories of a happy place that contrasts with the abusive society it became.
Synanon started as a successful drug and alcohol treatment program but evolved into a racially inclusive utopian community. However, in 1974, the community’s leaders descended into extremism, implementing strict control measures such as uniforms, shaved heads, vasectomies, and partner changes. They also acquired weapons and trained a military-like group. The community became isolated from the outside world, driven by the vision of its founder, Chuck Dederich, who initially formed Synanon to combat alcoholism but struggled with substance abuse and bipolar disorder.
The documentary series follows Cassidy and her mother Sandra Rogers-Hare as they reconnect with former members and delve into the nature of Synanon. They share personal experiences and reveal never-before-seen archival footage. The shocking truth uncovers startling discoveries for Cassidy.
“BORN IN SYNANON” is directed and executive produced by Geeta Gandbhir, with executive producers including Cassidy Arkin, Sandra Rogers-Hare, Jonathan K. Bendis, and Jessica Cozzetta. Producers are Steven Cantor and Jamie Schutz. Susan Zirinsky and Terence Wrong executive produce for See It Now Studios, with Aysu Saliba and Cara Tortora as supervising producers.
