Following the chilling seance recording heard in the first episode, Sian Eleri’s investigation into Helen Duncan continues in “The Voice.” The recording, featuring a gravelly male voice claiming to be a spirit, becomes the central focus of Eleri’s inquiries. Attendees of the seance insisted they saw and recognized the spirit, but were they deceived? Or did Duncan have accomplices aiding her in a sophisticated hoax?
Eleri turns to a present-day medium in Edinburgh, hoping for some clarity, but the encounter only muddies the waters further. The Edinburgh medium adds more mystery than it solves, with few answers. “The Voice” also explores reports of spirits speaking in different languages during Duncan’s séances, with sitters from various countries each claiming to hear spirits speaking their native tongues.
Seeking alternative explanations, Eleri consults with Professor Richard Wiseman, who introduces photographic evidence suggesting methods Duncan may have employed to trick her sitters. Meanwhile, Graham Hewitt, still pushing for Duncan’s pardon, guides Eleri toward a granddaughter of Duncan’s living in America who possesses what she believes is definitive proof that the authorities truly feared Helen’s powers.
“Paranormal Britain’s Last Witch: The Voice” airs Sunday, March 23 at 21:30 on BBC Three.
