In the second episode of this second season of Parole, viewers meet Jason, a serial burglar and jewellery store thief facing the parole board for a chance at freedom. With a history of using an axe to intimidate and falsely imprisoning victims, will the board take a chance on him? Jason is given an opportunity to explain the motivations behind his crimes and to convince the board of his readiness for release.
During his hearing, professional witnesses speak on Jason’s behalf, noting the progress he has made while in prison. However, this is not his first opportunity for release. Previously, the parole board recommended a move to an open prison, but Jason absconded, raising questions about his commitment to reform.
The episode also introduces Jeanette, who at 24 years old, was involved in a violent attack that resulted in the death of a man. Along with her co-defendant, Jeanette punched, kicked, and stamped on the victim. Now, the panel must decide if Jeanette has acquired the necessary skills to recognize and manage her risk factors effectively.
Parole: Can Leopards Change Their Spots? airs on BBC Two, Wednesday 2 October 2024, at 9:00 PM.
