Peacock’s black comedy thriller, Based on a True Story, is back for a second season of suburban angst and serial killer shenanigans, premiering November 21. Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina return as Ava and Nathan Bartlett, the couple who inexplicably befriended murderer Matt (Tom Bateman) in the name of podcast fame.

Season 2 picks up three months after the events of the first, with Ava and Nathan now dealing with the joys of parenthood while attempting to put their true-crime obsession behind them. Ava’s back to selling real estate, Nathan’s giving tennis lessons, and all seems relatively normal. Relatively.

Naturally, this domestic bliss is short-lived. A new string of murders rocks their world (again), pulling Ava back into the investigative game. Her concern is amplified by the lingering connection between her sister, Tory (Liana Liberato), and their resident serial killer. Because why wouldn’t you be worried about your sister dating a murderer?

Adding to the mix this season is Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Ava’s new friend, Drew. While Ava rekindles her unhealthy interest in homicides, Nathan’s focused on reviving his tennis career and, somehow, his friendship with the aforementioned murderer. It’s all fun and games until someone gets stabbed, presumably.

The trailer offers a glimpse of the escalating chaos, hinting at more close calls and questionable decisions. Whether the show can maintain the delicate balance of humor and suspense that made the first season work is an open question.

Based on a True Story Season 2 premieres November 21 on Peacock with all eight episodes.
