Peacock has officially poured out the last dregs of its horror series Teacup, opting not to renew the show for a second season. Based on Robert McCammon’s 1988 novel Stinger, Teacup seemed to have a decent pedigree, with James Wan (M3GAN, the Conjuring universe) among its executive producers and a cast led by Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Scott Speedman (You). Yet, even that combination of genre clout and recognizable names wasn’t enough to secure the show’s future on the streamer.
Teacup, which wrapped its first season on Thursday, October 31, 2024, revolved around a small-town community in rural Georgia menaced by a swarm of otherworldly creatures, including demonic insects and alien plants. While the premise may have struck some as a creature feature throwback, the series aimed to explore themes of resilience in the face of the unknown. Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone) steered the show as its showrunner. The cast also included Chaske Spencer, Kathy Baker, Boris McGiver, Caleb Dolden, Emilie Bierre, and Luciano Leroux.
The cancellation is a setback for horror fans who might have hoped Teacup would brew up more suspenseful storytelling. It’s also a notable miss for Peacock, which continues to search for a breakout genre hit. While the streamer has found success with dramas like Bel-Air and comedies like Poker Face, its forays into horror haven’t gained the same traction.
Teacup is a Universal Television production for Peacock. Executive producers are James Wan, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, Ian McCulloch, E.L. Katz, and Danielle Woodrow.
