Peacock’s Limited Drama “Apples Never Fall” To Star Annette Bening
Peacock announced today that Annette Bening (American Beauty, The Kids Are All Right), who has been nominated for four Academy Awards®, will play the lead character of “Joy Delaney” in the upcoming limited drama series “Apples Never Fall”.
The Delaneys give the impression of being the ideal family from the outside. Having recently sold their thriving tennis academy, Stan and Joy are living the life of leisure they always dreamed of. They have four adult children, and while they would love to spend time with them, each of them is preoccupied with their own lives.
When a hurt young lady unexpectedly shows up at Joy and Stan’s door, their lives are thrown into the kind of high-octane chaos they realise they have been needing. When Joy abruptly vanishes, though, her children are forced to take a chilling new look at their parents’ marriage and their family’s past. We delve into a family’s deepest secrets against the backdrop of professional tennis in this drama that begs the question, “Can we ever genuinely know the people closest to us?”
It has been over 20 years since Mrs. Harris (2005) on HBO, for which Bening received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, and so her return to television is eagerly anticipated. Bening has won two Golden Globes, one SAG Award, and been nominated for a Tony Award. She will also be seen in the upcoming Netflix film Nyad, co-starring with Jimmy Chin and directed by Academy Award, BAFTA, and Emmy winner Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.
Based on Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers) #1 New York Times Bestselling novel, which has sold over a million copies worldwide.
The series will be produced by Universal International Studios’ Heyday Television. Melanie Marnich serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. David Heyman will executive produce, alongside Liane Moriarty, Albert Page, and Jillian Share. Chris Sweeney (The Tourist, Back to Life) will direct multiple episodes, including the first.
