Rick Pitino, college basketball’s prodigal son, is back. After a tumultuous few years, he’s landed at St. John’s, tasked with resurrecting a program that hasn’t seen NCAA tournament success in a quarter-century. “Pitino: Red Storm Rising” chronicles this comeback attempt, and this week’s episode, “The Family,” adds a personal twist: Pitino is preparing to face his son on the court.
Now, coaching against your own offspring has to be a unique kind of pressure cooker. Will Pitino the coach be able to separate his paternal feelings from his competitive drive? Will he treat his son like any other opposing player, or will there be a hint of favoritism (or perhaps even extra tough love)?
