Forget the brochures; BBC One’s new series “Policing Paradise” offers a raw look at the realities of law enforcement in the sun-kissed islands of Bermuda. While tourists flock to the island for its pristine beaches and turquoise waters, the Bermuda Police Service faces a different kind of tide – one of shoplifting, theft, and drug importation.
In the premiere episode, cameras follow officers as they patrol Harbour Nights in Hamilton, a vibrant street festival that draws both locals and visitors. When a suspect is accused of using illegal substances, the officers must quickly assess the situation and maintain order amidst the festivities. Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons points out that “paradise” has its share of problems too, which often go unseen by the vacationing public.
The episode also introduces viewers to officers Jen Suter and Caleb Jean Pierre, a former barber from Britain, who bring their unique perspectives to the force. Their response to a controlled fire report turns into an unexpected bovine breakout when a mix-up sends a herd of cattle stampeding through the streets. Out on the water, Reserve Officer Hugo Benziger patrols the coastline on a jet ski, making sure those luxury yachts adhere to the island’s speed limit.
“Policing Paradise” takes us into the lives of those who work to keep this idyllic destination safe, proving that even in paradise, there’s always a need for a watchful eye. Tune in to BBC One at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 24th.
