CBS is doubling down on its freshman comedies, granting full season orders to both Poppa’s House and the NCIS prequel, NCIS: Origins. This vote of confidence suggests both shows have resonated with viewers, securing their place on the network’s lineup.
For NCIS: Origins, the prequel exploring a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the news is particularly sweet. The series has drawn an impressive 9 million viewers across platforms, a substantial jump from last year’s NCIS: Hawai’i premiere in the same timeslot. Set in 1991 and narrated by Mark Harmon, the original Gibbs himself, Origins offers a nostalgic glimpse into the character’s early days at NCIS Camp Pendleton.
Poppa’s House, starring the comedic duo of Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., is also celebrating a win. The sitcom, focusing on the often-fraught relationship between a talk radio host and his adult son, has garnered 6.41 million multiplatform viewers, demonstrating even stronger growth compared to its predecessor in the timeslot, Bob Hearts Abishola.
Both shows have seen significant gains on streaming platforms like Paramount+ and CBS TVE, indicating they’re capturing a digital audience as well. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach praised both series, noting, “These shows fit seamlessly into our Monday night lineup while resonating with viewers.” Poppa’s House airs Mondays at 8:30-9:00 PM, ET/PT, followed by NCIS: Origins at 10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT on CBS. With full season orders in hand, both shows have the opportunity to further develop their characters, storylines, and comedic potential.
