Life in Port Protection, Alaska, isn’t for the faint of heart. This isolated community of around 100 souls carves out an existence on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness, relying on self-sufficiency and a strong sense of community. There are no roads, no government, and certainly no law enforcement – just the residents, the elements, and the occasional camera crew capturing their unique way of life.
In this Tuesday’s episode, “Another Day in Paradise,” resident Oliver takes on a challenge that perfectly encapsulates the Port Protection spirit. He’s set his sights on some truly massive cedar trees, essential for a rather ambitious project: transforming his float house into what he calls his dream “kingdom.”
From hauling lumber to simply securing the next meal, the residents of Port Protection face a constant barrage of obstacles. Yet, they also find a certain freedom in their isolation, a security in their interdependence that’s rarely found in our hyper-connected world. They value the security of community without the constraints of bureaucracy.
“Another Day in Paradise” airs Tuesday, May 13 at 9:00 PM ET on National Geographic.
