Michael Portillo continues his colorful journey through Portugal this Saturday on Channel 5. This week, he’s heading south to the Algarve, but don’t expect just another tour of sun-drenched beaches. Portillo’s approach to travel is all about uncovering the history, culture, and hidden gems beyond the usual tourist traps.
He’ll meet a fisherman who risks his life harvesting goose barnacles, a delicacy prized for its unique flavor. He’ll also visit a master coppersmith in Loulé, witnessing the traditional craft firsthand. And, of course, no Portillo journey would be complete without a touch of historical exploration. He’ll examine the Islamic heritage of Silves, exploring its ancient castle, and visit the chilling bone chapel in Faro.
From there, it’s on to Olhão, known for its marine reserves and seahorse population. And because even the most intrepid traveler needs to eat, Michael will indulge in some fresh oysters at a beach restaurant owned by an expat and her Portuguese husband. Tune in to Channel 5 this Saturday at 8:00 PM to join Michael Portillo on his Algarvian adventure.
