Portugal with Michael Portillo: Aveiro and Coimbra (5, Saturday, March 29, 2025)

Channel 5 Numeric

Michael Portillo’s vibrant travelogues continue with another Portuguese adventure, exploring the historic cities of Aveiro and Coimbra. This Saturday, Channel 5 viewers can join him as he traverses canals, climbs cobbled streets, and unearths Roman remnants. It’s a journey filled with culinary delights, historical insights, and Portillo’s signature blend of enthusiasm and erudition.

Starting in Aveiro, dubbed the “Portuguese Venice,” Portillo gets his hands dirty (perhaps literally) assisting in the preparation of eel stew, a local delicacy. He also samples Ovos Moles, a traditional sweet treat, and learns about the city’s patron saint, Princess Joanna, and her surprising connection to England’s King Richard III. Naturally, a trip to Aveiro wouldn’t be complete without a look at the Moliceiro boats, once essential to local industries and now a colorful tourist attraction.

From Aveiro, Portillo travels to Coimbra, Portugal’s first capital and home to its oldest university. Guided by a former student named America, he explores the city’s steep, winding streets, looking into the history of Coimbra’s unique version of Fado music. Portillo also uncovers vestiges of the Roman city, Aeminium, including a two-story structure containing Roman artifacts.

Capping off his journey, Portillo enjoys a rowdy evening in a Tasca, experiencing the hearty, rustic cuisine typical of the region. “Portugal with Michael Portillo: Aveiro and Coimbra” airs Saturday, March 29th from 8:15 PM to 9:15 PM on Channel 5.
