Lifetime is set to air its new original movie, Pretty Hurts, this Saturday, June 28, at 8:00 PM ET. The film stars Haylie Duff as Julie, a former beauty queen, who, alongside her daughter Lauren, played by Sarah Borne, begins to peel back the polished façade of teen beauty pageants, uncovering some ugly truths beneath the glitter.
The movie explores themes of family and coming-of-age, all set against the backdrop of competitive pageantry. However, it also includes an important public health message: meningitis education. The film is part of GSK’s Ask2BSure public health campaign, aiming to inform audiences about the risks of this uncommon but potentially life-threatening illness.
Pretty Hurts works to highlight that young people aged 16 to 23 are at increased risk of contracting meningitis. The story aims to demonstrate how the infection can spread among young people through close quarters, kissing, and sharing personal items—all common occurrences in a pageant environment. Directed by Brian Herzlinger, with executive producers Eric Tomosunas and Sheri Singer, and written by Lydia Genner, the movie looks to combine dramatic storytelling with a significant health awareness message.
