Prime Video Orders “Rise of the Empress” to Series

Prime Video is adding another fantastical epic to its lineup with “Rise of the Empress,” a new series based on the popular book series by Julie C. Dao. The show follows the unexpected journey of Xifeng, a peasant girl thrust into the opulent, yet treacherous world of the imperial court when she enters a competition to become the Emperor’s Heir’s consort. Set within a fictional ancient Asian empire, the series promises political machinations, courtly intrigue, and a healthy dose of magic.

Crystal Liu and James Wong take the reins as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers, bringing Dao’s richly imagined world to life. With Liu and Wong at the helm, “Rise of the Empress” aims to capture the books’ blend of romantic fantasy, historical inspiration, and strong female characters. The casting of Xifeng and the Emperor’s Heir will undoubtedly be a subject of much speculation among fans.

The series represents a collaboration between Amazon Studios and JuVee Productions (Viola Davis and Julius Tennon), Significant Productions (Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi), and Gemma Chan’s production company. Dao’s involvement as co-executive producer should provide a measure of reassurance for fans concerned about adaptations straying too far from source material.

“Rise of the Empress” joins a growing roster of fantasy series on Prime Video, as the streamer seeks to capture a larger share of the genre’s passionate viewership. With its built-in fanbase and Prime Video’s global reach (the series will be available in over 240 countries and territories), “Rise of the Empress” appears well-positioned to carve out its own space in the increasingly crowded streaming landscape.

“Rise of the Empress” is an Amazon MGM Studios production for Prime Video. Executive producers include Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Forest Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Gemma Chan. Julie C. Dao serves as co-executive producer.
