Expect a whole lot of Texas-sized drama as Netflix saddles up with its new series, “Ransom Canyon.” Set against the backdrop of the ruggedly beautiful Texas Hill Country, this series seems to be a mix of romance, family feuds, and Western grit.

The story centers around three ranching families, dynasties locked in a generations-long battle for control of the land. Think “Dallas” meets “Yellowstone,” with a dash of “Friday Night Lights” thrown in for good measure. At the heart of the conflict is stoic rancher Staten Kirkland, played by Josh Duhamel, a man seemingly as weathered and unforgiving as the land itself. But even Staten has a soft spot, and that comes in the form of Quinn O’Grady, played by Minka Kelly, the owner of the local dancehall.

The arrival of a mysterious cowboy throws a wrench into the works, stirring up long-buried secrets that threaten to tear these families apart. The series features an ensemble cast including Andrew Liner, Eoin Macken, James Brolin, and Lizzy Greene, among others. With Amanda Marsalis directing the pilot and April Blair at the helm as creator and executive producer, “Ransom Canyon” looks to be a series with plenty of potential.
