Restoration Australia Saving a South Melbourne Weatherboard Wreck

In the latest episode of Restoration Australia, airing on ABC Australia on Thursday, 20 June, host Anthony Burke introduces us to a couple, Jess and Paul, who have embarked on a daunting mission to rescue and transform an 1880s two-storey weatherboard wreck in South Melbourne into their dream family home.

Jess and Paul have their work cut out for them as they take on the enormous task of restoring one of the few remaining two-storey timber weatherboard spec homes from the 1880s, built during the population boom following Victoria’s gold rush.

Unoccupied and uncared for over four decades, the house is in a dire state, with leaks, crumbling walls, and vegetation invading almost every room. To make matters worse, the building has developed a concerning tilt and is slowly sinking into the ground.

The couple aims to preserve as many original features as possible, including intricate plaster ceiling roses and mid-19th-century cornice work. However, they quickly discover that the road to restoration is paved with potential disappointments. As they begin stripping away the old lathe and plaster walls, they uncover a twisted timber frame on the ground floor and leaning brick fireplaces that pose a significant threat to the house’s structural integrity.

Jess and Paul also face the challenge of complying with modern fire and building regulations, which may force them to make compromises that could break their hearts and alter their vision of restoring the home to its near-original state. Will they be able to navigate these obstacles and create their dream home, or will the challenges prove too great?
