It’s time for a trip back in time, Gemstone-style. HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones” kicks off its fourth season with a flashback episode titled “Prelude,” transporting viewers to the rather unexpected setting of 1862.
Forget megachurches and televised sermons. This origin story features a young, rascally Gemstone joining the Confederate army as a preacher. However, it appears a touch of divine intervention might redirect this sinner’s path. Knowing the Gemstones, though, “divine intervention” probably involves some blend of opportunism and sheer luck.
“Prelude” seems to be more than just a quirky detour. It has the potential to offer crucial context for the present-day Gemstone family dysfunction. It also has the potential to provide a darkly humorous take on the often-uncomfortable intersection of religion and social upheaval throughout history. Might this historical deep dive connect to contemporary plot points in the series? We’ll have to wait and see.
Tune in to HBO this Sunday, March 9th at 10:01 PM ET to witness the genesis of the Gemstone empire.
