The Rookie Season 7 Episode 3 Recap: “Out of Pocket”

The Rookie Key Art

John Nolan’s usually steady hand wavers in “Out of Pocket,” as his focus shifts from everyday policing to a deeply personal vendetta. Bailey’s return home after her abduction ordeal should bring relief, but Nolan remains consumed by the threat of her escaped ex-husband, Jason Wyler. This fixation drives him to disregard protocol, pursuing leads independently and placing himself in considerable danger. While understandable given the circumstances, his rogue actions risk not only his life but also his career.

Meanwhile, a friendly rivalry between Tim and Lucy – each determined to mold their rookie into the ideal officer – takes an unexpected turn. Their competitive spirit inadvertently encourages their trainees to disregard the chain of command during a hostage situation, a serious breach that Sergeant Grey addresses with his usual blend of wisdom and exasperation. The rookies are swapped, the bet declared a draw, and a valuable lesson about following orders is imparted.

Elsewhere in the LAPD, personal lives are just as complicated. Celina observes Nolan’s increasingly erratic behavior, sparking concern among his colleagues. Nyla contends with friction at home, as her husband James struggles with growing distrust of the police force. Lucy’s personal life is similarly unsettled by the return of Rachel, an old flame whose presence stirs complicated feelings.

Amidst this interpersonal turmoil, Nolan’s obsession inadvertently leads him to thwart a hit on Wyler, orchestrated by the Southern Front cartel and carried out by a hitman known only as “El Mavado.” While saving an innocent life, Nolan’s methods remain questionable, adding fuel to the fire of his already precarious situation. The episode ends with Nolan walking a tightrope, his future with both Bailey and the LAPD uncertain.
