Ruth: New Cast Members Announced for ITV’s Ruth Ellis Drama Series

The upcoming four-part ITV drama series, Ruth, has announced additional cast members for its exploration of the story of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the UK. Toby Jones will play John Bickford, Ruth’s solicitor, who uncovers the extent of her abuse and fights for a case of provocation. Laurie Davidson will portray David Blakely, Ruth’s abusive lover, while Mark Stanley takes on the role of Desmond Cussen, Ruth’s admirer caught in a toxic love triangle.
Other key roles include Joe Armstrong as DCI Davies, the detective in charge of Ruth’s case; Arthur Darvill as Victor Mishcon, Ruth’s divorce lawyer; Juliet Stevenson as Dr Charity Taylor, the Governess of Holloway Prison; and Toby Stephens as Melford Stevenson QC, Ruth’s defense barrister.
Set in 1955, the series is based on Carol Ann Lee’s biography, “A Fine Day for Hanging: The Real Ruth Ellis Story,” and has been adapted by Kelly Jones. It will be produced by Silverprint Pictures, known for their acclaimed shows such as Shetland, Vera, and Flesh and Blood.
Commissioned by ITV and produced in association with ITV Studios, Ruth will have global distribution handled by the studio. The series is written by Kelly Jones, produced by Angie Daniell, and directed by Lee Haven Jones.
