Sam Elliott Saddles Up for ‘Landman’: Predictable? Sure. A Good Fit? Absolutely, for Paramount+

Land Man Key Art

Well, file this under “Least Surprising Casting News of the Week.” Sam Elliott, fresh off winning a Screen Actors Guild Award for growling his way through Taylor Sheridan’s “1883,” is officially reuniting with the prolific producer for the second season of Paramount+’s “Landman.” It’s the kind of move that makes perfect sense within the expanding Sheridan television universe – add a respected veteran actor with proven chemistry within the system to a show already stocked with seasoned talent.

Elliott joins “Landman” as a series regular for its sophomore run. He’ll be working alongside a cast already headed by Billy Bob Thornton (who snagged a Golden Globe nomination for the first season), Demi Moore, and Andy Garcia.

It makes sense when you remember Elliott’s widely praised role as Shea Brennan in the “Yellowstone” prequel “1883,” which made his return to a Sheridan project feel almost bound to happen. “Landman” itself, based on the “Boomtown” podcast, explores the world of oil rigs and fortune seekers in West Texas. Filming for the new season is already underway down in Texas, so Elliott will likely be joining the production soon.

Paramount+ has to be happy with this news. They report that the first season of “Landman” did well, calling it one of their top 10 original streaming series when it was released and citing an impressive 35 million global viewers for its premiere – the kind of numbers networks love to highlight, of course. If you need to catch up before Elliott makes his entrance (presumably with that signature mustache, though character details are still under wraps), the first season is available on the streaming platform.

Adding Elliott further solidifies the show’s credentials as a drama populated by familiar, heavy-hitting actors, a formula that Sheridan and Paramount+ clearly believe in. It keeps the Sheridan machine churning and gives fans of Elliott’s particular brand of weathered authority something specific to anticipate in season two.
