The holiday season can be a mixed bag. Fruitcake, awkward family gatherings, and the existential dread of another year gone by. But fear not, comedy fans, for a beacon of festive cheer shines through the tinsel-strewn darkness: Martin Short returns to Studio 8H. Yes, the comedic whirlwind himself is gracing the “Saturday Night Live” stage once again, this time with musical guest Hozier in tow.
This marks Short’s third time hosting “SNL” – his fifth appearance overall, if you count his stint as a cast member back in the 1984-85 season (a season some might argue was best left forgotten, but we’re not here to judge…much). Short’s previous hosting gigs have been the stuff of legend, including a memorable appearance alongside his “Three Amigos!” compadres. So, expectations are, shall we say, elevated.
Joining the merriment is Irish singer-songwriter Hozier, making his second appearance on the “SNL” stage. Fresh off the release of the deluxe version of his latest album “Unreal Unearth: Unending” released December 6, 2024, he seems ready to serenade us into the holiday spirit (or at least provide a moody counterpoint to Short’s inevitable manic energy).
“Saturday Night Live” is in its 50th season, an impressive feat for a show that’s seen its share of ups and downs (and more than a few questionable sketches). This season, however, has managed to attract a solid mix of established stars and up-and-comers, proving the show’s enduring appeal. Short last graced the stage in December 2022, co-hosting with his “Only Murders in the Building” partner-in-crime, Steve Martin. That episode offered a comfortable, if somewhat predictable, dose of holiday humor. Let’s hope this time around, Short and the “SNL” writers bring something a little… sharper.
“Saturday Night Live” airs Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC. Don’t miss the Short/Hozier combo this December 21.
