The fifth episode of Saving Lives’s second season takes audiences to Cardiff once again, where paediatric urology surgeon Selena Curkovic is preparing to operate on eight-year-old Barney, who has been waiting five years for life-changing surgery. At the University Hospital of Wales, spinal consultant Stuart James faces a challenging situation with a full operating list, prompting him to make difficult decisions about patient prioritisation.
The episode also follows thoracic surgeon Tom Combellack at University Hospital Llandough as he performs a high-stakes procedure on Jan, who has a suspicious growth on her lung. Due to its proximity to her heart, the standard procedure to determine whether it is cancerous is too risky, leaving Tom no choice but to operate immediately.
Saving Lives Season 2 Episode 5 airs Monday, 17 September 2024, at 9:00 pm on BBC Two.
