Secrets of the Dead: Lost Treasures of Angkor – King’s Gold

Secrets of the Dead Key Art

PBS’s Secrets of the Dead returns with a glint in its eye, focusing on the elusive gold of the Khmer Empire. Forget your usual dusty museum pieces; “Lost Treasures of Angkor – King’s Gold” is a real-time treasure hunt of sorts, following archaeologists as they uncover gold and silver artifacts in Laos, potentially linked to the early Khmer civilization.

While the discovery of ancient bling is always a ratings grabber, this episode also looks to examine the craftsmanship of these objects, aiming to provide context and historical significance. Viewers won’t just see shiny things pulled from the dirt; they’ll get a glimpse into the techniques and artistry of the Khmer craftspeople.

And because no historical documentary is complete without some dramatic landscape shots, Secrets of the Dead takes us on a virtual tour of the sacred area surrounding Vat Phou, a site believed to hold clues to the movements and rituals of ancient Khmer kings. Whether this translates to compelling television or another round of “Ancient Aliens” speculation will be revealed soon enough.
