In the latest episode of Secrets of the London Underground, Tim and Siddy explore Gloucester Road, a station serving the Circle, District, and Piccadilly lines. With a rich history dating back to the 1860s, the station initially consisted of two separate sections, the earlier of which boasts a grander design.
Tim discovers a hidden gem: an original footbridge overlooking the modern platforms, providing a unique perspective on the station’s evolution. He also uncovers a concealed space that offers a glimpse of the brickwork from the early tunnel construction.
Siddy, on the other hand, looks into the story of the later station, designed by Leslie Green and built in the early 1900s. Here, original tiles and remnants of the lifts stand as testaments to the station’s past. Together, they explore a now-disused platform that has been transformed into an art gallery.
Siddy’s journey takes her beyond London, as she visits Goole in Yorkshire, where 70 new Piccadilly Line trains are being assembled. These trains will soon join the underground network at South Harrow, where Tim is given a special tour of the upgraded depot, prepared to accommodate the new fleet.
