Secrets of the London Underground looks into the history of Stockwell Station on the Victoria Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in this episode. Rail historian Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway from the London Transport Museum take us on a journey back in time.
Tim uncovers fascinating facts about Stockwell Station, which was originally the terminus station for the City and South London Railway, the world’s first deep-level electric tube railway. He discovers evidence of a deep-level shelter used during World War II and contemporary tile art depicting a swan in tribute to a local pub. Meanwhile, Siddy explores the station’s depths, revealing metallic tiles and cast iron segments in a disused lift shaft, relics of bygone eras.
The episode also takes us to the DLR’s main depot, where Siddy learns about new technology being developed to detect passengers on the tracks. She is given exclusive access to test runs of their upcoming fleet, getting a sneak peek at the future of this innovative transport system.
