A new Sherlock Holmes adaptation is always cause for some curiosity, and SBS is importing “Sherlock & Daughter,” a US original currently airing on The CW, to Australian shores. This version, set in Victorian London, offers a modern spin on the classic detective, played with a certain rumpled weariness by David Thewlis. But the real twist? Sherlock might just have a daughter.
Blu Hunt plays Amelia Rojas, a young American woman who arrives from California claiming a surprising familial connection to the world’s only consulting detective. Is she friend, foe, or family? Sherlock, naturally, is skeptical, especially since he’s currently being blackmailed, with Dr. Watson (Sean Duggan) and Mrs. Hudson held hostage. This isn’t exactly the ideal time for a family reunion, even one he never knew he was supposed to have.
Plus, Sherlock’s nemesis, the ever-present Moriarty (Dougray Scott), lurks in the background, likely pulling some strings. Australian viewers might recognize a familiar face in the cast as well, with Joe Klocek (“Invisible Boys”) playing Dan in this eight-part series.
“Sherlock & Daughter” premieres in Australia on Thursday, 8 May at 9:30 PM on SBS.
