Shetland: Scotland’s Wondrous Isles Episode 4 (Channel 5, June 16, 2024)


The Shetland Islands reveal their wonders in the fourth installment of Channel 5’s documentary series. Airing on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at 9:00 pm, the episode explores the islands’ rich maritime heritage, vibrant community spirit, and unique attractions that draw visitors from across the globe.

With 1,700 miles of coastline, Shetland has a strong boating culture, and the episode delves into the competitive world of yoal boat racing. We follow skipper Laura and her team from the Hamnavoe club as they prepare for the crucial final race of the season at their home regatta. Meanwhile, in Lerwick, the year’s biggest Shetland Sheep sale takes place, where Farmer Eric judges the pre-sale show and seeks to expand his own livestock.

The episode also celebrates Shetland’s self-sufficient spirit and highlights the value placed on utilising every part of the sheep. Wool Week, an annual event, showcases the vibrant knitting community and attracts global attendees, with exhibitor Terri carrying on the traditional craft from her grandmother, Wilma. Elsewhere, traditional crofter Pearl reminisces about her days as a midwife when her favourite cow requires assistance during calving.
