A brutal hammer attack on an estate agent kicks off the latest two-part Silent Witness story, “Homecoming,” promising a grim and twisty ride. When the Lyell Centre team arrives at the scene, they find the victim, Philip Chalmers, viciously murdered, the murder weapon conspicuously absent. Chalmers, it seems, was simply preparing a house for a buyer when his life was abruptly cut short.
The investigation quickly pulls Nikki and Jack into a familiar orbit when they cross paths with Detective Superintendent Jane De Freitas and DC Nick Whelan. De Freitas, a recurring character in the Silent Witness universe, brings a certain baggage and history to the proceedings, hinting at complications beyond the immediate crime.
As the team digs deeper, a journalist named Harry Singh emerges as a person of interest, adding another wrinkle to the already tangled narrative. Is Singh merely covering the story, or is he somehow entangled in the unfolding events? And what significance does Claire Steadman’s farewell to her sister Tina, who’s off to meet Singh, hold?
With whispers of a local government conspiracy hanging in the air, “Homecoming – Part One” sets a suitably ominous tone. The missing murder weapon, the familiar face of De Freitas, and the shadowy presence of Singh all suggest that this case is more than a simple act of violence. Part two is on BBC One tomorrow evening at the same time or you can both parts on iPlayer.
Silent Witness airs Mondays at 9:00 PM on BBC One.
