The Pin Pals, Springfield’s least likely bowling contenders, are taking their dubious talents to the state championships in Capital City. This Sunday’s “The Man Who Flew Too Much” promises the usual Simpsons blend of low-stakes competition and high-stakes absurdity. Will Homer’s bowling skills improve under pressure, or will he, as usual, find a way to turn a simple game into a town-wide spectacle?
Let’s be honest, the chances of these guys winning are about as good as Barney staying sober for a full episode. But that’s never stopped the Simpsons from finding humor in the mundane. The return of Mona Simpson (voiced by Glenn Close), however, is a welcome surprise. Perhaps her presence will give Marge someone to talk to while Homer is busy destroying public property or antagonizing the opposing team.
The real question isn’t whether the Pin Pals can win, but how spectacularly they’ll fail. Knowing the Simpsons, it’ll involve at least one explosion, a possible encounter with a minor celebrity, and some surprisingly poignant family moment tucked in between the mayhem.
The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT on FOX.
