History’s new series, “Sitting Bull”, attempts a comprehensive portrayal of one of the most iconic figures in Native American history, starting with the rise to prominence of the Hunkpapa Lakota leader. Forget the Hollywood version of cowboys and Indians. The premiere episode, “Nations Collide,” aims to get to historical truths about the post-Civil War era.
The episode lays the groundwork by showing American settlers fanning westward across the Great Plains. It sets a historical context of encroaching settlers who threatened the way of life of Lakota people. As their territory shrinks due to conflict, Sitting Bull emerges as a defiant leader, uniting various Native American tribes to resist the encroaching U.S. Army alongside Crazy Horse.
The 125-minute premiere effectively interweaves expert commentary, scripted sequences, and archival materials in an attempt to bring to life a turbulent period of American history. The documentary examines the leader’s bravery, and military cunning. “Sitting Bull: Nations Collide” premieres Tuesday, May 27 at 9 p.m. ET on History.
