Sky Arts Launches New Search for Landscape Artist of the Year

Sky Arts is set to launch the ninth series of Landscape Artist of the Year, which will premiere on 10th January, 2024. This season will be hosted by Stephen Mangan, with Dame Joan Bakewell retiring from the show at the end of the recent run of Portrait Artist of the Year. The series will feature a new group of artists who will travel to various locations in the UK to create landscape paintings.

The artists will visit locations such as Dunnottar Castle, Hever Castle, Hever Lake, Stonehaven, Liverpool Docks, Liverpool Three Graces, Buckler’s Hard New Forest, and Covent Garden. They will have to capture the essence of these places through their artwork within a specific time frame.

Each heat will feature eight artists who will work with different mediums to create plein air paintings in just four hours. They will be judged by Tai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano, and Kate Bryan, who will select the semi-finalists. Additionally, 50 wildcard artists will also compete for a chance to enter the semi-final.

The semi-final will consist of the eight heat winners and the best wildcard artist. From there, three artists will be chosen to compete in the final round. The winner of Landscape Artist of the Year will receive a £10,000 commission from the Science Museum to create an artwork inspired by Orkney.

The series will be aired on Sky Arts, Freeview Channel 36, and streaming service NOW, aiming to provide a platform for talented artists to showcase their skills while capturing the beauty of the UK.
