Smoggie Queens, the award-winning comedy from Middlesbrough native Phil Dunning, is getting a second series on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer in 2025. The show, produced by Hat Trick Productions, recently won Best Comedy at the RTS North East Awards.
Here’s the Lowdown: The core cast is back: Dickie (Dunning), Mam (Mark Benton), Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), Sal (Patsy Lowe), and Stewart (Elijah Young). Series two will continue to present the lives of this “chosen family” in Middlesbrough, exploring their relationships and celebrating the resilience of the queer community in the North East of England.
What This Means Now: Fans of the first series can look forward to more of the same: silly humour, sharp one-liners, and plenty of heart. The recommissioning signals the BBC’s continued support for regional voices and LGBTQ+ representation.
The Bigger Picture: The show’s success, including Dunning’s Best Newcomer win, underscores the growing appetite for authentic, regionally-focused comedy. Smoggie Queens provides a platform for North East talent, both on and off-screen, with support from North East Screen. Producer Chris Jones expressed gratitude to the BBC “for giving this big old queer show another run.” Managing Director Jimmy Mulville heralded it as a “feel-good, laugh out loud show”.
