The episode explores the events leading up to Martie’s arrest and the crucial role played by her childhood friend, Martin Drake, who reported the plan to the authorities and worked as a confidential informant. It includes over an hour of audio and video recordings detailing Martie’s plans for the murder, as well as her defense attorney’s request for the jury to carefully consider the motive and demeanor of the witnesses.
The prosecution, on the other hand, argued that Martie wanted Russell dead so she and Drake could be together, and they presented evidence of a $300,000 life insurance policy with a specific payout for a shooting. The jury found Martie guilty of attempted murder and murder solicitation, and she was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since then, she has been charged in three additional felony cases.
