BBC Two presents a special episode of Songs of Praise, hosted by Pam Rhodes, as the show commemorates 150 years of The Salvation Army’s presence and service in Wales. The episode, titled “Salvation Army: Serving Communities,” airs on Sunday, 4 August 2024, at 1:40 pm.
In this celebratory episode, Pam Rhodes examines the remarkable history of The Salvation Army’s beginnings in Wales. She travels to Merthyr Tydfil, home to the oldest Salvation Army church still in use in Wales. Here, she uncovers the story of two young girls who, in 1848, were dispatched to this rugged industrial town with a mission to spread the gospel. With God’s guidance, these pioneers successfully brought faith and hope to Merthyr Tydfil.
Aled Jones joins the presentation, making a special visit to Liverpool and the Salvation Army’s unique community space known as ‘Strawberry Field.’ This location, famously immortalised in a Beatles song, now serves as an inspiring hub for young people seeking employment.
The episode also explores The Salvation Army’s deep-rooted love of music and singing. The Rev Kate Bottley enthusiastically joins a tambourine and timbrel session, while the show features performances by the renowned ‘International Staff Songsters,’ sharing their beautiful harmonies.
As always, the episode is filled with uplifting music and songs, including a rendition of “How Great Thou Art” led by the illustrious Katherine Jenkins at Pershore Abbey. The full list of songs includes:
