“Songs of Praise,” the venerable institution of hymn-singing and gentle reflection, is about to get a bit…giggly. In “Faith and Laughter,” Rev. Kate Bottley tackles the age-old question: is laughter truly a gift from God? Now, I’m no theologian, but I’m pretty sure the Almighty appreciates a good chuckle. And who better to investigate this holy hilarity than Bottley, a woman who can find the sacred in the everyday?
Bottley’s spiritual quest takes her to London’s annual clown service at All Saints Church, Haggerston. Yes, a clown service. Apparently, even those in full face paint and oversized shoes need a little divine intervention now and then. She chats with The Rev. Laura Luz about the role of humor in making faith accessible and creating a welcoming community. Beyond the red noses and squirting flowers, Bottley also connects with social media stars John and Jade Reynolds, whose humorous take on faith, family, and Jade’s paraplegia has earned them millions of online views.
And because no exploration of faith and laughter would be complete without a professional funny person, Bottley also sits down with comedian Joy Carter. Carter believes her comedy and faith are inextricably linked. “Songs of Praise” is clearly aiming for a broader conversation about the place of joy and humor in our lives, even in the face of hardship. Find out if they succeed when the hymns and hilarity commence on BBC One, Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 1:15 PM.
