Aled Jones hosts a special episode of Songs of Praise ahead of National Poetry Day, exploring the intersection of faith and poetry. He visits St Giles in the Fields, known as the ‘Poets’ Church’ in London, and meets with Christian poet John Greening to discuss the long history of faith-inspired poetry. John shares his favourite writers and introduces a hymn by William Cowper.
Aled also examines the life and work of renowned hymn writer Sir Isaac Watts, whose 350th birthday is being celebrated this year. Joined by Dr Daniel Johnson, an expert on Watts, Aled analyses the poetry of one of his most famous hymns, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” They uncover how Watts skillfully crafted his hymns to evoke emotion and passion in those who sing them.
The episode also features Christian performance artist Storm Cecile, who shares her powerful story of finding faith during a moment of crisis and how it influenced her creative journey. Storm presents a poem, inspired by the Bible, that conveys a message of God’s grace and love.
Songs of Praise: Faith in Poetry airs on BBC One at 1:15 pm on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
