South to Black Power, An HBO Original Documentary Premieres November 28

The HBO Original documentary “South to Black Power” is set to debut on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Directed by Sam Pollard and Llewellyn M. Smith, the documentary follows Charles M. Blow, a New York Times columnist and author, as he embarks on a journey across the country to explore his theory on Black Liberation.

Blow’s theory involves a strategy for Black Americans to move to the southern states in order to gain greater political power and control over southern legislatures. He challenges Black Americans to disrupt the status quo by affecting change at the polls through reverse migration. The documentary features conversations with politicians, historians, community activists, colleagues, friends, and family members.

The film also delves into Blow’s personal story, from his childhood in Louisiana to his commitment to racial justice. As the midterm election results come in, Blow reflects on the gains made but also considers the possibility that a historic political transformation in the South may not occur in his lifetime.

The documentary includes interviews with notable participants such as Chokwe Antar Lumumba, mayor of Jackson, Mississippi; Jemar Tisby, historian and educator; Dean Baquet, former executive editor of The New York Times; Brent Staples, editorial board member of The New York Times; and many others.
