Vice TV is set to enter the sports commentary arena with Sports Gone Wrong, a new series that bypasses the heroic narratives in favor of the bloopers, scandals, and outright bizarre moments that dot athletic history. The show kicks off its 10-episode run this Wednesday at 9:00 PM ET with its premiere episode, “Cheat Code.”
The series is narrated by comedian and sports personality Joey Mulinaro, who guides a panel through a weekly breakdown of athletic absurdity. The regular commentators include four-time NBA Champion John Salley, comedian Godfrey, podcaster Jessica Smetana, and comedian Paul Virzi. Their job is to react to and dissect archival footage of everything from athletes breaking rules in spectacular fashion to infamous public relations fiascos.
The premiere gets right to it, with the panel revisiting questionable NFL team theme songs, putting Michael Jordan’s cologne to the test, and breaking down the infamous 1996 Orioles-Yankees playoff game where young fan Jeffrey Maier’s outfield interference became a part of baseball lore. It’s a mix of well-known gaffes and deeper cuts, all filtered through the lens of a group that’s more interested in the laughs than the stats. It’s a show for fans who understand that sometimes the most memorable plays happen far from the scoreboard.
Sports Gone Wrong is produced by VICE Studios Group.
