A new fantasy film adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s book, Fing!, is in production, boasting a cast including Taika Waititi, Mia Wasikowska, and Walliams himself. Filming began in February at Screen Queensland Studios in Brisbane, Australia.
Here’s the Lowdown: Fing! tells the story of Myrtle Meek (newcomer Iona Bell), a spoiled girl who demands her parents (played by Wasikowska and Blake Harrison) find her a “Fing.” This leads them on a wild jungle adventure. The “Fing,” it turns out, is a destructive monster. Myrtle must then face off against the evil Viscount (Waititi), who wants to capture the rare creature. Walliams plays Myrtle’s Headmaster, while other cast members include Richard Roxburgh, Penelope Wilton and Robyn Nevin.
What This Means Now: This is a major co-production between Stan (Australia) and Sky UK. The project features a high-profile creative team, including director Jeffrey Walker (The Portable Door, The Artful Dodger) and co-writer Kevin Cecil (Veep, Gnomeo & Juliet), along with special effects from Wētā Workshop (Lord of the Rings, Avatar).
The Bigger Picture: Fing! is being positioned as a significant family film, with theatrical releases planned in Australia and New Zealand (via Transmission) before becoming a Stan Original Film. This marks a significant step for Walliams’ work, moving beyond television adaptations to a large-scale cinematic release. It highlights a successful co-production model involving Australian and UK production houses with a release on both streaming and in the cinema.
