Starz Acquires UK Drama “Mary & George”

STARZ has acquired the rights to the limited event series “Mary & George,” set to debut in 2024. The series, created by D.C. Moore and produced by Hera Pictures in association with Sky Studios, tells the scandalous true story of Mary Villiers and her son George, who schemed, seduced, and killed to gain power in the Court of England and the bed of King James I. Julianne Moore stars as Mary Villiers, with Nicholas Galitzine playing her son George. The ensemble cast also includes Tony Curran as King James I. The series will air on STARZ in the U.S. and Canada.
“Mary & George” is based on the nonfiction book “The King’s Assassin” by Benjamin Woolley. The series is written by D.C. Moore and directed by Oliver Hermanus. Liza Marshall is the executive producer for Hera Pictures, along with D.C. Moore, Oliver Hermanus, and Julianne Moore. Sam Hoyle serves as executive producer for Sky Studios.
The deal for the series was brokered by Sky Studios, with NBCUniversal Global Distribution handling international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.
The acquisition of “Mary & George” adds to STARZ’s provocative slate of programming. The series explores themes of sexual and political conquest in a male-dominated society, as Mary and George rise from humble beginnings to become influential players in the English court.
The series is set to debut in 2024 and will consist of seven episodes.
