Steve Coogan & Harriet Walter to star in Brian and Margaret for Channel 4

Channel 4

Channel 4 has commissioned Brian and Margaret, a new drama from Baby Cow Productions. This one off drama will be directed by Stephen Frears and written by James Graham. It will star Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter.

The single drama revisits the infamous 1989 television interview between former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and journalist Brian Walden, which marked the end of their friendship and catalysed Thatcher’s resignation. The interview, a tense showdown, became a national talking point and set in motion a chain of events that would lead to Thatcher’s departure from office.

Steve Coogan says: “It’s great to be telling a story from the era of the sorely missed forensic interview – two giants of their time locking horns to determine the future of Britain. To act opposite Harriet Walter with a script by James Graham directed by Stephen Frears is a challenge of the very best kind!”

Coogan and Walter take on the roles of these two iconic figures, bringing to life their complex relationship and the intense exchange that would change the course of British politics. The story, adapted from Rob Burley’s book Why Is This Lying B*stard Lying To Me’: Searching for the Truth on Political TV, explores the impact of full-length political TV interviews and their potential role in safeguarding modern democracy.
