Channel 5 turns its lens on extreme weather this Friday with “Storms from Space: Into the Hurricane.” This documentary examines the growing intensity of hurricanes, fueled by a changing climate, and the sophisticated technology employed to track these monstrous storms.
The program goes inside the eye of the storm with the “Hurricane Hunters,” the brave crews who fly aircraft directly into these swirling behemoths, gathering crucial data that helps meteorologists predict a hurricane’s path and intensity. Back on solid ground (or rather, high above it), satellites play a vital role in providing early warnings of a hurricane’s approach, giving coastal communities precious time to prepare.
With the Met Office’s red “danger to life” warning for Storm Eowyn still fresh in our minds from January, this documentary’s timing is particularly relevant, giving us a look at how scientists and meteorologists utilize every available resource during the hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to late November.
“Storms from Space: Into the Hurricane” airs Friday, 9 May at 8:00 PM on Channel 5.
