Apple TV+ isn’t waiting for the final curtain call. Seth Rogen’s Hollywood satire, “The Studio,” has been renewed for a second season, the streamer announced today, well ahead of its season one finale on Tuesday, May 21. This early vote of confidence suggests Apple is pleased with the buzz (and likely viewership) surrounding Rogen’s latest comedic venture.
Starring Rogen as Matt Remick, the freshly minted head of Continental Studios, the series takes us behind the velvet ropes of moviemaking. Season one features a comedic ensemble including Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn, all embroiled in the chaos of Remick’s attempts to produce major films, including, yes, a movie about the Kool-Aid Man.
Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who co-created the series, quipped about incorporating their experiences producing season one into the material for season two, leaving one to wonder just how meta this Hollywood send-up can get. Add to that the first season’s parade of celebrity cameos – with Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, and Zac Efron all gamely playing themselves – and season two seems ripe for even more insider-y humor.
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, expressed his enthusiasm for the show’s return, though he wisely kept mum on any specifics about where the story might go next. No premiere date has been announced, however.
