Sunken Warships: Secrets from the Deep: HMS Exeter: Always Faithful (5Select, Monday 26 August 2024)

Channel 5

The latest episode of Sunken Warships: Secrets from the Deep explores the story of the HMS Exeter, a ship renowned for its bravery and sacrifice.

The episode examines the ship’s early battles, including its engagement with the German pocket battleship Graf Spee in 1939 off the coast of South America, which led to the crew being celebrated as heroes by Winston Churchill.

After repairs, the HMS Exeter was deployed to the Far East and later participated in the Battle of the Java Sea. Unfortunately, during this battle, a Japanese shell severely damaged the ship, and despite attempts to withdraw, Japanese warships hunted and sank her. The wreck was rediscovered in 2007, well-preserved, only to be mysteriously destroyed by illegal salvagers by 2015.
