BAFTA-winning actor Suranne Jones embarks on a strange journey in the two-part documentary series, ‘Investigating Witch Trials,’ premiering on Channel 4 on Sunday 23 June. In the first episode, Suranne explores the dark history of witch trials, focusing on the notorious mass executions in Pendle, Lancashire, and the brutal trials that swept through Europe, particularly Germany, 400 years ago.

The documentary sees Suranne, who grew up near Pendle, uncover the stories of women accused of witchcraft and explores why so many women were targeted during this tumultuous time in history. She examines the long-lasting impact of these trials and how they have cast a shadow over women’s lives for centuries.

Suranne begins her investigation in Pendle, where she discovers the chilling details of one of the most infamous mass executions for witchcraft in English history. Through her exploration, Suranne uncovers how women’s lives were profoundly affected by the legacy of these trials and how, even today, some women are reclaiming the term ‘witch’ and reshaping its meaning.
