So, another season of Swamp People, another excuse for grown men and women to wrestle oversized reptiles. This time, though, the History Channel is throwing in a meteorological curveball. Apparently, a hurricane has swept through the Louisiana bayou, and instead of, you know, sensible post-disaster behavior, the swampers are diving headfirst into a supposed “feeding frenzy.” Because gators, after a major weather event, are just ravenous.
The core of the show remains unchanged – risk your life for a hefty payday, courtesy of some very large, very toothy creatures. This week, however, the stakes feel slightly less manufactured. Troy and Pickle are apparently ditching firearms, opting for spears in a restricted zone. Points for originality, I suppose, though one wonders about the practicality. Elsewhere, Joey and Kallie are on the hunt for a mythical 14-footer. And Little Willie? He’s been saddled with running 50 lines solo. It’s a classic reality TV setup: throw a challenge at someone, see if they crack.
Meanwhile, Bruce and Anna encounter the bane of all reality TV: mechanical issues. How very convenient. The subtext, of course, is that this new hunting ground is potentially lucrative – meaning, if they can get their equipment working, there’s a bigger paycheck in store. It’s the same formula, re-skinned with a hurricane-shaped bow. Whether or not it elevates the proceedings beyond the usual gator-grappling antics is for the die-hard fans to decide.
