The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade returns to Oxford Street on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and the ABC will broadcast the event live at 7:30 PM on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Here’s the Lowdown: Courtney Act and Mon Schafter will host the broadcast, with Jeremy Fernandez and Mel Buttle reporting from the parade route. The broadcast will focus on the parade’s “Free To Be” theme. Over 12,000 participants are set to take part in what is described as one of the world’s largest LGBTQIA+ events.

What This Means Now: The ABC’s coverage allows people across Australia to participate in the celebration. This is the ABC’s third year broadcasting the parade. Additionally, triple j will host a Mardi Gras party with Latifa Tee, playing queer anthems.

The Bigger Picture: The ABC is showing continued support for the LGBTQIA+ community through this broadcast and related content. Starting February 17, ABCQueer released a new four-part series called OK Boomer, OK Zoomer on ABC iview and YouTube, exploring intergenerational queer experiences. The broader availability of LGBTQIA+ content on ABC platforms helps with a better understanding of the issues.
